Saluti da Taormina. Mare. Sole. Amore. (Greetings from Taormina. Sea. Sun. Love.) This was the summation of Dolce & Gabbana‘s Spring 2013 collection from the designers themselves. Print is such a literal and direct way for designers to communicate their story – Dolce & Gabbana’s collection is the best example of this. 1950s shapes, embellished with hand illustrated Roman knights and folkloric illustrations, printed woven rafia (traditional handicraft), Sicilian sea maps printed on canvas handbags, hand painted riviera stripes and soft florals set the scene of warm sun, sea and the romance of an Italian seaside village. We can just see Sofia Loren strolling the cobbled walk of Portofino in any one of these looks. Oh, take me to the riviera!
