A great day 1 of MBFWA! Desert Designs’ gorgeous show ‘Together, Towards the Water’ was a medley of amazing prints drawn from the archive of Aboriginal artist Jimmy Pike. DD were inspired by three of Jimmy Pike’s stories, including ‘Japingka’ depicting how people and spirits work together, harnessing the forces of nature to create waterholes; ‘Mangkja’ is a white bird from the Dreamtime, like an owl; and ‘Mirnmirt’ is a sand drawing, when a woman talks about marriage with a man, she draws this story in the sand. Bright rainbow prints against relaxed shapes, capture a truly Australian aesthetic.
