Kathy Sosa picked up a paintbrush for the first time at age 45. Back in 2006 she began experimenting with a magical form of mixed media portraiture, which beautifully united her oil portraits with wallpapers and textiles from her personal collection.
Usually expressed as 3D folk art, Trees of Life have grown in popularity in Mexico over the past century. Trees of Life are most often ceramic, and vary widely from the rustic to the exquisitely artful. Customarily they often centre on creation, or celebrate the history of a particular family – tracing it back to certain ancestors. The nativity is popular also, but if you look a little deeper, Trees of Life can be found on a myriad of subjects – anything from completely traditional to the extraordinarily unorthodox.
Kathy’s paintings re-interpret said traditional folk art with a contemporary edge. The paintings depict modern women integrated with Trees of Life. Influenced by 18th and 19th century Spanish and Mexican portraiture, iconic religious images and masks elaborate with ornamentation. Inspired by folk art, the intended effect is quirky and unpretentious. Each Tree of Life incorporates a set of thematic figures that represent what the woman is thinking, or obsessing about at the imagined moment. Some of her paintings even represent everyday events, while others tackle more complex issues.
For Kathy there is a ‘Tree of Life’ figure in almost every culture, and this series provided her with a platform to express her respective thoughts and ideas. Kathy believes no subject or moment is too small to be celebrated. We couldn’t agree more.
