For Dion Lee’s Spring/Summer collection ‘Composure’ industrial technologies paired with highly-skilled tailoring presented a range that paralleled the world’s leading fashion houses. With the endless possibilities that today’s technology provides it is exciting to see young designers implement such new and varied techniques, involving experiments with digital printing, plastic, leather, binding, acid and other fabric treatments.

In an effort to utilise a textile both visual and textural that had never been used before Chrisotopher Kane developed a plastic encasing filled with coloured vegetable oil and glycerine that bubbled and warmed with body heat for his Fall 2011 collection. The capsules were zigzagged along the edges of jackets, shift dresses and slim-lined skirts fashioned in traditional crochet and digitally printed leather. (One can only hope that encasing is well sealed!)

Having thoroughly proven his ability to furnish structured, practical and innovative clothing with his previous Spring/Summer 2011 collection, Lee has reached new heights with more experimental fibres, implementing digital printing technologies coated in a plastic film, creating additional depth and reflection.

Perhaps not always practical, yet undeniably intriguing textile innovation continues to present endless possibilities for those willing to take on the challenge. We are glad to see Dion Lee has!
