We had the pleasure of working with shining star and one to watch Lucilla Gray for her FW15 collection. Lucilla graduated from Massey University, New Zealand in 2014. Following which she set up her namesake label, founded on playful sophistication and innovative design. He signature combination of bold silhouettes and textile development are experimental yet classically refined, merging conceptual fashion with ready to wear ideals.
We interviewed Lucilla on her design approach and print inspiration…
What inspired your FW15 collection?
This season the collection was inspired by minimalism and minerals. I manipulated sheets of metal to create the print design, the result was an abstract print which reminded me of precious stones. Each piece in the collection then became a different mineral.
How do you approach the design process?
My process always begins with research, I like to look at art and collect different visual elements which inspire me. I then experiment and develop my silhouettes, these come from how I feel and how I want to express the body. It’s important to me that garments make you feel empowered.
How do you incorporate print into your collections?
I always design with the print in mind, sometimes the print design will come before the garment. I always try to design pieces which will maximise the print.
What are you working on next?
Next I will be working on Spring / Summer 2016. Expect a bit of print somewhere!
